Am I a Candidate for Bone Grafting?
Gum disease or physical trauma to your lower face can result in bone loss. Your jawbone may also be weakened from atrophy if a tooth or teeth aren't replaced with a dental implant. Bone augmentation surgery adds enough strength to your jaw to prepare it for dentures or an implant, but you need to understand how much healing time is required. Some procedures can take months to finish, but you'll have a restored jawbone that will support your dental implant or dentures for better oral health. To help us decide whether you need bone augmentation, your team will obtain digital x-rays and perform a thorough physical exam during your consultative appointment at MINT dentistry in Indianapolis, IN.
How Does Bone Grafting Work?
We’ll begin your procedure by helping you settle into one of our massage chairs before we administer the sedation decided on during your consultation. Once the graft is ready to be placed, your MINT dental team will attach it to your jawbone through incisions in your gums. Proteins and collagens are added to the graft to help it integrate with the natural bone. When the graft(s) are placed, the incisions in your gums will be closed and thoroughly rinsed. The graft will be allowed to heal and fuse with your jawbone.
After the Bone Grafting Procedure
Over the next 6 – 9 months, the graft bonds to your jawbone while your mouth heals. It is vital during this time to follow an optimal home oral care routine with brushing and flossing along with any products your MINT dentistry team recommends (for example, a prescribed mouthwash or antibiotics). We will schedule your follow-up visits at MINT dentistry so our team can check your recovery and determine when your jawbone is strong enough for a dental implant or dentures. To protect your oral health for years to come, our dentists suggest attending cleaning appointments twice a year at our Indianapolis, IN facility.
The MINT Commitment
Before we schedule your procedure, we’ll confirm your benefits and calculate any out-of-pocket costs so you know where you stand. If it is considered medically necessary, some of the bone grafting treatment expenses may be paid for through your dental insurance. During your consultation and exam, we can estimate your costs and help you understand how best to afford your care. We are committed to helping our patients get the treatment required for a healthy smile. If you do not have insurance and need help affording your bone graft surgery, ask your dentist for information on the MINT Discount Plan.
