Who Is a Candidate for Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation?
Laughing gas is one of the most common sedation methods available and can be used safely on most patients. During your consultation, our team will review your medical history, current medications, and any questions or concerns you may have to make sure nitrous oxide is a good choice. N2O sedation at MINT dentistry can be offered during most minimally invasive procedures and is often combined with local anesthesia so you are relaxed and comfortable. Nitrous oxide gas may also be added to standard dental exams and cleanings if you have anxiety or fears about the dentist and find these procedures stressful. Nitrous oxide gas may not be a great choice if you have difficulty breathing through your nose, have extreme dentophobia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or have other conditions.
How Does Nitrous Oxide Gas Work?
At the start of your appointment, we'll help you settle into one of our massaging treatment chairs, providing you with a pair of Beats headphones and MINT sunglasses so you're comfortable. When you are settled in and ready, the nitrous oxide gas is administered through a nasal hood. As you breathe normally to inhale the gas, it will quickly start relaxing you. A member of the MINT dentistry team will monitor your response to the sedation and vital signs, so they can adjust the volume as needed during your appointment to keep you comfortable. It's normal to feel tingling in your limbs, plus a feeling of warmth, vibration, euphoria, or well-being as the nitrous oxide gas starts to work. Nitrous oxide is normally used along with lidocaine or another local anesthesia to numb the areas being treated. After we finish the procedure, the gas is turned off, and the effects should quickly wear off.
What Can I Expect Following Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
Recovery following N2O sedation is generally immediate, as the gas leaves your body after a couple of minutes. You should be able to drive and return to your regular day after your appointment. Side effects are uncommon, but it is possible to experience temporary chills, sweating, headaches, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Please contact MINT dentistry if you have any concerns or side effects that last longer than a few days. To minimize your chance of nausea and vomiting, our team suggests you eat a small snack before your procedure and then wait at least three hours to eat again.
